Tricks for choosing the best firewood(continue)
What never functions well as a firewood store are the improvised woodsheds like the ones here:
- Partially constructed and unfinished.
- Deferred until you have a better idea. (καυσόξυλα)
- Delayed until you have more time or until the sun comes out.
- Tent-like structures made of plastic or fabric.
- Combinations of the above.
Especially in holiday homes along the coast, you see many unsightly examples of all these categories with the common factor of having collapsed under the weight of the snow or where the material has been torn, or both. There is no remedy; in a matter of a few months, the firewood deteriorates.
The problem is not only that the firewood becomes damp, but also that nature soon begins its decomposition cycle. Birch is particularly vulnerable to mold and mildew, and regardless of the type of wood, organisms large and small, such as woodworms and worms, will eventually multiply in the wood, causing the beauty of the firewood to vanish.
What gets the job done
Fortunately, this is all easy to avoid. If space allows, a freestanding woodshed with good ventilation is ideal. In most homes, the most practical option is to store firewood in a place that is little used during the winter, such as an open yard or loggia. A covering can be useful as a temporary roof, but never by enclosing the firewood in such a way that it cannot breathe, even if it is dry. It is better to store firewood under an eave or set up a roof leaned from the facade. The roof can have a hinge to make the space more versatile and fold it away when not needed. The best method for storing small firewood (under 30 cm) is in a sack.
If there is the possibility of a freestanding temporary woodshed, you can do it quickly and easily with Euro pallets and metal sheets. The standardized bed measurements are 120x80 or 80x60, excellent for standard lengths of wood. Pallets are used as flooring and walls, and panels placed diagonally on the back provide rigidity to the structure. The metal sheets will be used for the roof. Six large pallets can store two cubic meters of wood, and since they are the same variety as the wood, they do not look too bad either. There are many variations that can be adapted by need or aesthetics; most variations will work as long as the roof is sturdy and the structure strong enough to withstand wind and snow. A large roof is always an advantage to avoid rain and snow.
Seeing a stack of wood provides us with a sense of security, and when you feel the comforting and cozy warmth of the power that the wood burning in the stove gives, you know that you can face winter with a different and better attitude than before. Part of this joy is that feeling of having everything in order, of being in tune with the seasons. That you have enough firewood and that it is good wood. A little planning gives a sense of control, that you can be orderly and live with the seasons. It's no longer a problem for the cold to rage outside, while the oldest source of power known to man is quietly crackling in your fireplace. (προωθηση ιστοσελιδων)
Firewood and keeping warm by burning wood in a stove or fireplace can be both a passion and a science.
